Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar _ Leading private equity firms active and committed to making investments in Myanmar on September 10, announced the launch of the Myanmar Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (MPE&VCA), a locally-based independent non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving the vibrant venture capital and private equity industry in the country.
The MPE&VCA offers a forum for promoting and increasing understanding about the role of venture capital and private equity in Myanmar’s economic development.
Josephine Price, inaugural chair at MPE&VCA and co-founder of Anthem Asia, states, “This launch is an important event for the financial services and investment community in Yangon and Myanmar. It marks a milestone in the development of the Myanmar economy since the country started opening up in 2012. The investment community has reached critical mass.”
The association was incorporated on May 2019 and as of the official launch, MPE&VCA has 11 members who are playing a major role in the VC and PE industry in Myanmar, a market with over $200 million of dry powder, money that has been committed to invest.
As of its founding, MPE&VCA had received funding from CDC Group, the development finance institution wholly owned by the UK government.
Founding members of MPE&VCA include Anthem Asia, Daiwa PI Partners,
Delta Capital, Emerging Markets Entrepreneurs Myanmar, Emerging Markets Investment Advisers, Insitor Management, Myanmar Investments International, Myanmar Strategic Holdings, Seed Myanmar, Yangon Capital Partners, and YGA Capital.
MPE&VCA intends to takes an important role of linking the different stakeholders within the Myanmar market, similar to what the VC/PE associations in other major markets in Asia such as Hong Kong and Singapore are providing impact within its market.
“Our early focus will include some basic research, helping regional and international investment groups understand more about Myanmar, and being a voice for institutional investors with the Myanmar authorities,” said Price.
MPE&VCA is opening its membership to private equity, venture capital, and other investment firms as well as professional service providers that are directly or indirectly supporting the VC/PE industry.
The association will offer an unparalleled support to its members such as acting as an access point for those seeking investment capital; offering opportunity to network, collaborate and coordinate activities with members engaged in different sectors of the VC/PE community; and access to events and professional training.
